The DICOM standard exists to facilitate exchange of imaging data between various devices.

A Simple Introduction to the DICOM Standard has many interesting features for the research scientis, contains many links and is an excellent resource for both information and DICOM software.

The RSNA site provides a brief overview of the history of DICOM and there is also a link to the DICOM test software at the Mallinckrodt server which allows users to determine if two systems will communicate

The ASL web a good introduction which includes some of the history of DICOM.

A non-technical introduction to the DICOM standard which is based at the RSNA website. This is excellent introduction to the DICOM standard for the novice.

Information and reports This is a useful resource.

DICOM base standard 2001. Contains a comprehensive list of pdf files for the >DICOM base standard 2001. A list of the upgrades from the 2000 base standard is also available.

DICOM Resource contains reference images and CTN test software.

IHE is a global initiative designed to designed to advance the state of data integration in healthcare. The IHE-UK website provides information both for those demonstrating and selling equipment conforming to the IHE specification, and for those planning to purchase such equipment.

British Institute of Radiology (BIR) is an independent forum which aims to bring together all the professions in radiology and allied medical and scientific disciplines to share knowledge, and educate the public.

Radiological Society of North America (RSNA)
The mission of the Radiological Society of North America is to "promote and develop the highest standards of radiology and related sciences through education and research". It organises an annual conference and exhibition, and has been at the forefront of setting standards for PACS and IHE.

The Royal College of Radiologists Imaging Informatics Group is special interest group affiliated to the UK Royal College of Radiologists (RCR). This website discussion board is open to all clinical imaging professionals and imaging industry employees and aims to facilitate communication between clinical members and others interested in PACS, teleradiology and related imaging IT developments.

The UK displays network is a Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) funded network for the UK display community. Its purpose is to engender industrial and academic collaboration through networking activities centred around seminars, workshops and tutorials.

The Radiology Service Improvement Team provides clinical and managerial expertise in service improvement methodology and redesign to managers, clinicians and Department of Health, in order to support the delivery of radiology services, as outlined in the National Framework for Radiology Service Improvement. The link provides examples how PACS can support this.
